VOLLEYBALL TEAMS STEP UP TO SUPPORT VICTIMS OF HURRICANE HARVEY

September 6, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

With six roster players who hail from the barrier island and who lived through the ravages of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the Kellenberg volleyball program jumped into action when news spread of the catastrophic conditions in Texas resulting from Hurricane Harvey.

Working in conjunction with the Long Beach Fire Department and the parish of St. Mary of the Isle, the junior varsity and varsity teams set out to collect cleaning materials, first aid equipment, and baby supplies. In just two days, the players donated over 10 boxes of goods and delivered them to the donation center at St. Mary’s on Friday, September 1st. An eighteen-wheel tractor trailer departing on Saturday morning is scheduled to travel south, fully laden with these much-needed items. Senior Molly Perrotta, whose car was stuffed with supplies, commented, “I remember so vividly what happened to my family and me just a few years ago, and how simple things–like fresh water and dry clothing–meant so much to us.”

In the midst of their four scrimmages and tournament play this week, the volleyball program took some time to train something beyond their physical skill, something that resides deep in a person’s heart. In this act of mercy they illustrated how “empathy is about finding echoes of another person in yourself.”

Student athletes get to work cleaning Harvey-flooded homes in League City

September 6, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

As League City resumed regular operations Thursday, Clear Creek ISD athletes helped clean up homes in one of the city’s hardest-hit neighborhoods, Clear Creek Village.

Football, baseball and volleyball players gathered salvageable items and carried heavy furniture and debris out of flooded homes in the neighborhood that sits next to Clear Creek west of the Gulf Freeway.

“We’ve got kids out here working, trying to give back to the community because they support us in everything we do,” said Craig Dailey, head football coach at Clear Springs High School.

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – On Wednesday, August 30, Wesleyan University welcomed 776 students to the Class of 2021, while an additional 52 transfer students also arrived. Several Cardinal student-athletes were there to assist families with unloading vehicles and hauling suitcases, boxes, lamps, microwaves, computers, and more to the students’ residence halls.

“We want our student-athletes involved in community service and this is an opportunity to make our newest Cardinals feel at home on campus,” said Director of Athletics, Mike Whalen ’83. “We’ve been doing this for eight years now and the first-years and their parents appreciate it.

“We hope they’ll come out and support us at our games, and it’s important to welcome them and show them that Wesleyan is a great community to be a part of.”

The 2017-18 athletics season begins next Tuesday, Sept. 5 when the field hockey team travels to Bristol, R.I. to face Roger Williams University at 7 p.m. The following day, Wednesday, Sept. 6, the women’s soccer team hosts UMass Boston at 7:30 p.m. for the first athletic contest on campus in the new academic year, while the men’s soccer team will open its season at WPI beginning at 7 p.m.

HAMDEN, Connecticut – Quinnipiac University’s department of Athletics and Recreation hosted the annual Positive Play Welcome to kick start the 2017-18 academic year on Wednesday, August 30 at 7:00 AM in Burt Kahn Court.

An annual department-wide event, student-athletes, staff members and administrators all convened at the Mount Carmel campus where University President John Lahey, Director of Athletics & Recreation Greg Amodio and Senior Associate Athletic Director Bill Mecca all touched on the importance of community service and the student-athlete’s role in connecting with members of the surrounding community.

Adopted years ago, Quinnipiac’s Positive Play initiative encourages community involvement by the University’s student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Quinnipiac is dedicated to the promotion and development of service, service learning and civic engagement programs and initiatives that involve students in the local community. The student-athletes are challenged to critically examine the role their service plays in cultivating personal development and social change. Over the course of the academic year, Quinnipiac student-athletes will participate in over 500 total hours while participating in more than 100 community service events.

Student athletes team up for a Cause

SPRING, Texas – Worthing High School football and basketball players are working on the same team.

“It’s devastating to see how much water can do, and how many families have been hurt and how much they have lost,” student Keshon Williams said.

The students volunteered their time through the nonprofit organization called Lighthouse for Students, a group that focuses on mentoring students in the Sunny Side area.

“One of the students called me and said, ‘Ms. Kelly, you give us so much in this community. Can you please tell me how I can give back?” said Kelly Martens, the founder of Lighthouse for Students.

Williams was that student, and he took along his teammates and coaches to help clean out homes in one Spring subdivision.

“We’ve been breaking down the sheetrock, bringing it outside, taking out old things that have been damaged because of the flood,” Williams said.

” I don’t know who was better — the football team or the basketball team, but they were all great,” Cindy Anderson said.

The Anderson family is just one of the families who the group helped out after Cypress Creek flooded their home of 49 years.

“Not only saved by strangers, but strangers come out to help and get everything out of the house and that’s all you can ask for,” said Lauren Brockwell, Anderson’s granddaughter.

The group finished their day of hard work with a picture and a prayer.

“These kids want people to know that they care. Just because they come from a certain area of town doesn’t mean that’s who they are,” Martens said.
